Citizens Bank announces donation of $75,000 to support tornado victims in Western Massachusetts

Grant to Springfield nonprofit HAPHousing for emergency and long-term housing assistance

BOSTON (June 3, 2011) Citizens Bank today announced the donation of $75,000 to support tornado victims in Springfield and other parts of Western Massachusetts. The Citizens Bank Foundation’s grant to the Springfield nonprofit HAPHousing will provide emergency housing assistance as well as long-term support for those most in need in the aftermath of the storm.

“The effects of these tornadoes have devastated thousands of individuals, and the hard work of the long-term relief effort is just now beginning,” said Jerry Sargent, President, Citizens Bank, Massachusetts.  “Citizens is proud to support the critical work that our long-time partners at HAPHousing will be doing to help local families recover from this terrible event and rebuild their lives.”

HAPHousing will target $25,000 of the funding for emergency relief efforts, providing displaced families with financial assistance of up to $4,000 to help with relocation costs. These costs may include security deposits, rent, utility hook-ups, moving expenses and other necessities. The remaining $50,000 will support Springfield’s neighborhood revitalization program, a partnership with the city of Springfield to create affordable housing and home ownership opportunities for the city’s low- to moderate- income population.

“We are very grateful for Citizens’ support and its immediate response to assist with the housing needs of those displaced after this devastation,” said Peter Gagliardi, Executive Director, HAP.  “Citizens Bank is a committed affordable housing partner in Springfield and we are proud to partner with them as we respond to the many needs of our clients.”
