Citizens Bank names Community Farm of Simsbury its newest Champion in Action in Connecticut

Providence, R.I. (April 14, 2011) Citizens Bank has announced that the Community Farm of Simsbury has been recognized as a Champion in Action® for the second quarter of 2011 in the food and nutrition category.

The award was announced by Citizens Bank, during an on-air segment during a newscast on News 8 WTNH today. The award includes a $25,000 grant from the Citizens Bank Foundation.

“Citizens Bank is proud to support the Community Farm of Simsbury and its work of educating kids on the value and importance of eating healthy foods,” said Ned Handy, president of Citizens Bank in Connecticut and Rhode Island. “Its success in contributing more than 4,000 pounds of locally grown produce to nonprofits in the region is both remarkable and inspirational.” 

The Community Farm of Simsbury is an organization that promotes education and local agriculture while practicing sound environmental stewardship on a working farm. The organization is also preserving its historic structures and faming responsibly to maintain the organic certification of the property and to protect the adjacent Farmington River. 

“The Community Farm of Simsbury is committed to providing families in need throughout the region with organically certified produce and to offering students hands-on, farm-based educational programs,” said Tim Goodwin, Executive Director of CFS.

Champions in Action is a partnership between Citizens Bank and News 8 to provide financial support and public awareness to the nonprofit organizations that work every day to champion change in our communities. It was launched in 2002.

Each quarter, a nonprofit organization among a range of social service topics in Connecticut is recognized as a Champion in Action. Each Champion in action receives the following support in addition to the $25,000 grant from the Citizens Bank Foundation:

• Media coverage from News 8/MyTV9, including public service announcements.
• Volunteer support from Citizens Bank and News 8 WTNH /MyTV9.
• Public relations support and promotional support through visibility at Citizen Bank branches and
  citizensbank.com.
