Citizens Bank contributes more than $100,000 to support Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebrations in Boston

BOSTON (January 13, 2011) - Citizens Bank and the Citizens Bank Foundation announced that it is contributing more than $100,000 to support commemorative events marking Martin Luther King, Jr. Day across the city next Monday, January, 17.

The funds will support three key celebrations in Boston which celebrate the legacy of Dr. King’s goal of promoting justice and equality for all; the 41st MLK Jr. Memorial Scholarship Breakfast, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Open House and the Boston Children’s Chorus’s annual MLK Jr. Tribute Concert.

We hope that as many people as possible can take part and enjoy the celebrations, marking the birth of such an extraordinary activist,” said Jerry Sargent, President, Citizens Bank, Massachusetts.

Sponsored events kick off with the annual MLK Jr. Memorial Breakfast at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Now in its 41st year, it is the nation's longest commemorative breakfast honoring the life and work of Dr. King. More than 1,200 people will attend the 2011 breakfast, co-chaired by the Union United Methodist Church and St. Cyprians Episcopal Church. The funds support student scholarships and community programs. Citizens Bank Foundation has supported scholarships at the breakfast for the past five years. All day Monday (from 10 a.m. – 4,45 p.m.), the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston celebrates the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. by opening its door to the public for free. Visitors can enjoy a special program of family art-making activities, spotlight talks, musical performances, short films and museum tours. This is the seventh year that the Citizens Bank Foundation has supported the MFA on this day. Further information is available at www.mfa.org.           

The celebrations culminate with the Boston Children’s Chorus’s annual MLK Jr. Tribute Concert, on Monday evening at the New England Conservatory. More than 100 7-18 year olds will celebrate MLK Jr.’s legacy through a powerful performance, which will air live on WCVB- Channel 5. Citizens Bank is the principal sponsor of the concert.
