Citizens Bank unveils life-size Freedom Trail Map in partnership with the City of Boston and the Freedom Trail Foundation
Map details the 16 nationally significant historic sites throughout Boston
BOSTON (April 22, 2010) - To commemorate Patriots’ Day, which was celebrated this week and recognizes the first battles of the Revolutionary War, Citizens Bank in partnership with the City of Boston and the Freedom Trail Foundation today unveiled a six and one-half foot high, nine-foot-wide map of the Freedom Trail in Boston’s historic North End neighborhood.
The map, which is located on the exterior wall of the Citizens Bank ATM vestibule at the corner of Hanover and Cross Streets, details the 16 nationally significant historic sites of the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail walk that weaves through the North End, Charlestown, Beacon Hill and downtown Boston.
“This map will serve as a reminder to residents and tourists alike of the prominent role Boston played in the establishment of our independence,” said Robert Matthews, Vice Chairman, Commercial Banking at Citizens Financial Group, Inc. “We are proud to display it as part of our commitment to supporting the communities where we do business. The map will provide a history lesson to those who pass by it each day.”
The Freedom Trail is the largest attraction in New England with three-million visitors walking the painted red trail annually. In 1946, the Freedom Trail Foundation was established as the umbrella organization to promote and preserve the Freedom Trail and raise public awareness of the 16 national historic sites on its route, including Paul Revere’s House, the Old State House and the USS Constitution.
“The map is located along both the Freedom Trail, at the gateway to the North End, and along the Greenway – where all visitors to and residents of Boston gather to celebrate our city’s rich history and our promising future,” said Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino. “This partnership is an example of the public and private sector working together to revitalize our neighborhoods.”
“The Freedom Trial is so very important to the retelling of the magnificent stories of the Revolution and Boston’s important role in it,” said Mimi La Camera, President of the Freedom Trail Foundation. “Any time we can make the experience of walking the Trail easier and more fun is another step in preserving these sites and having an even greater impact on economic growth in Boston and the state. This map is a welcome wayfinder for the Freedom Trail – both beautiful and interesting.”
Joining Matthews, Mayor Menino and LaCamera at today’s unveiling were State Representative Aaron Michlewitz and 18th Century Tour Guides.
