Amos House named Champion in Action in Rhode Island in the workforce development category
Nonprofit agency receives unrestricted $25,000 grant, PR and volunteer support
Providence, R.I. (January 12, 2010) - Citizens Bank, Rhode Island and NBC 10 today named Amos House in Providence as their 2010 first quarter Champion in Action® in the workforce development category. As part of the award, Amos House will receive a $25,000 grant, media coverage and extensive promotional and volunteer support for its outstanding work.
The grant will be used for job training and employment for those in need in our community. Since its inception 34 years ago, Amos House’s mission has grown to become a national model for workforce development. Amos House has created innovative job training programs that work in conjunction with supportive social services.
“Citizens Bank is pleased to name Amos House as the newest Champion in Action in the workforce development category,” said Ned Handy, President, Citizens Bank, Rhode Island. “This award will help Amos House to continue to provide opportunities for those who are looking to find and keep stable employment by giving them the training and tools they need to succeed.”
“NBC 10 is proud to honor the exceptional work of Amos House. This organization’s micro-businesses have gained statewide attention and are a national model for re-entry, job training, employment, social services and housing,” said Lisa Churchville, President and General Manager of NBC 10.
Champions in Action is a joint initiative of Citizens Bank and NBC 10, launched eight years ago, to recognize and support nonprofit organizations for their contributions to Rhode Island communities. A new Champion in Action is selected each quarter among a range of social service topics.
Amos House is being recognized for cultivating workforce development through its three businesses:
· More Than A Meal Catering, employing graduates of the Amos House Culinary Education Program to provide quality catering services to
local businesses and schools.
· Friendship Café, a local café offering affordable meals to residents of local neighborhoods, to be staffed by the Amos House Culinary
Education Program.
· Amos House Builds, a home improvement business providing jobs to graduates of the Amos Carpentry Training Program.
As a Champion in Action, Amos House will receive:
· A $25,000 contribution in unrestricted funds from Citizens Bank.
· Media coverage from NBC 10, including public service announcements and television profiles.
· Volunteer support from Citizens and NBC 10 employees.
· Extensive public relations support.
· Promotional support, highlighting the “Champion in Action” in all Citizens Bank branches and on its ATMs.
· Exposure on both Citizens Bank and NBC 10 Web sites.

Applications for the second quarter 2010 Champion in Action in the family-support category are due January 15 and the winner will be announced in April 2010. Applications for the remaining 2010 topics can be obtained online at www.citizensbank.com/community.
