Citizens Bank’s Gannon Named 2018 In-House Leader in the Law
Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, Rhode Island Lawyers Weekly and New England In-House honor legal professionals for being community leaders, forward thinkers
BOSTON – Stephen T. Gannon, general counsel and chief legal officer of Citizens Financial Group, was recently recognized by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, Rhode Island Lawyers Weekly and New England In-House as a 2018 In-House Leader in the Law.
“Our In-House Leaders were chosen for their work over a number of years,” said Susan Bocamazo, Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly publisher and editor in chief. “In making our selections, we considered a wide variety of factors, with emphasis on time spent mentoring younger attorneys, pro bono commitments and efforts to give back to the legal community."
Accepting the award on behalf of the entire Citizens legal team, Gannon emphasized the culture of partnership and collaboration among his colleagues and their business partners.
“It’s been an exciting journey leading the Legal Department for a newly-public company. With an eye toward innovation and creative resource management, we’re able to serve as strong and trusted advisors to our business partners,” Gannon said. “I like to think of all of us in the Department as leaders, so the reality is that this recognition grows directly out of our support for one another and the support of our great clients throughout Citizens.”
Gannon joined Citizens in August 2014 and serves on the bank’s Executive Committee.
Prior to joining Citizens, Gannon served as executive vice president and deputy general counsel for Capital One Financial Corporation, leading that company’s Legal Department. In addition, he was Capital One’s market president for Central Virginia. Previously, he served as General Counsel of the retail brokerage group of Wachovia Securities, as a Branch Chief in the Division of Enforcement with the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission, and in private practice advising broker dealer and financial services clients.
Gannon has held numerous positions within financial industry and legal organizations, including with the SIFMA Compliance and Legal Division and the Financial Services Roundtable. He served as President of the John Marshall Inn of Court and currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Managing Board of The Clearing House Association and as a member of their Finance Committee. He is also a member of the Georgetown Law Corporate Counsel Institute.
Active in the community, Gannon has served on the Boards of the Homeless Shelter of Richmond, Junior Achievement of Richmond and Communities in Schools of Virginia, as well as being appointed by the Governor to the Board of the Virginia Community College System. He now serves as an Overseer for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and is a member of their Audit Committee. He is an active supporter of Community Servings, the Rhode Island Food Bank and Jersey Cares.
