Day One named Champion in Action in Violence Prevention category
Citizens Bank and NBC 10 provide $35,000 funding, public relations and volunteer support
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Day One, a non-profit dedicated to reducing sexual abuse and violence, has been named a 2017 Champion in Action® in the category of violence prevention. The award, announced jointly by Citizens Bank and NBC10, includes $35,000 in unrestricted funding as well as promotional and volunteer support for the organization’s outstanding work.
Day One’s mission is to support and advocate for those affected by sexual abuse and violence. Day One provides treatment, intervention, advocacy, education and prevention services for Rhode Islanders of all ages.
The organization will use the Champions in Action award to implement its newest prevention education program, iMentor, which engages inner city boys ages 11-15 through mentoring and role modeling to become agents for social change.
Champions in Action is part of Citizens Helping Citizens Strengthen Communities, the bank’s program designed to enhance quality of life and economic vitality in local communities. It provides support for nonprofit organizations to recognize their contributions to communities throughout Rhode Island.
“Day One provides hope, healing and action for Rhode Islanders affected by sexual abuse and violence,” said Barbara Cottam, head of Corporate Affairs at Citizens Bank. “Their work is a great example of how non-profits are able not only to help individuals, but also to initiate social change in the community.”
“Day One takes a holistic approach to solving the nagging problem of sexual abuse in our community” said Vic Vetters, vice president and general manager of NBC 10. “We hope this recognition will focus the state’s attention on the good work being done every day at Day One.”
To date, the Champions in Action program has awarded 317 nonprofits more than $8.6 million in contributions and promotional support.
“We thank Citizens and NBC10 for the Champions in Action award,” said Peg Langhammer, executive director, Day One. “Their recognition and support will help Day One expand and deliver innovative programs that address sexual assault and violence as a community concern.”
